It is in 1703, from a deserted and unattractive area that Peter first decided to build a city of incomparable beauty:
a Versailles on water … the Venice of the Tsars.
The sovereign, visionary, sees an open window on the West, to extirpate the medieval Russia and bring it into the Age of Enlightenment. From St. Petersburg, Russia in Europe shinned by its writers and poets, by musicians and dancers, its painters and jewelers …
It is the largest city in Russia after Moscow. Today, the two cities share the roles: the cultural to St. Petersburg, the dynamism and cosmopolitanism to Moscow.
